James “J Dilla” Yancey is one of five Detroit natives who will be honored with secondary street signs in the Motor City. Additional honorees include the late draftsman Vincent Chin, two-time NBA Champion Earl Cureton, labor leader Horace Sheffield Jr. and legendary musician Joseph Anthony “Amp” Fiddler.
“Everyone here that was recommended is notable, is honorable, has done great things for our city, and we appreciate that this is very difficult for us to only select five,” City Council President Mary Sheffield said.
J Dilla was also honored by the Detroit Pistons earlier this year. The NBA franchise enlisted Royce Da 5’9 to design Detroit Pistons merchandise honoring the late producer.
“It is a great honor to be responsible for curating his likeness in this exclusive merchandise drop entrusted to me by his estate and the [Detroit Pistons],” Royce said.
“This campaign holds major significance not just for myself, but also for the city of Detroit and the hip-hop community as a whole.”
The collection of J Dilla-inspired merchandise was released on March 13, 2024 in honor of the city’s “313 Day” holiday.
