Tensions continue to rise in Israel and Iran as their conflict grows increasingly tense.
On Saturday, October 26, Israel announced that it had launched “precise strikes on military targets in Iran.” Hours later, Israel revealed the strikes were completed and its “mission was fulfilled.” Israel’s airstrikes reportedly hit 12 “planetary mixers” that produce fuel for Iran’s long-range ballistic missiles. However, Iran has downplayed the damage that Israel’s attacks reportedly caused.
“Enemy planes were prevented from entering the country’s airspace… and the attack caused limited damage,” a statement from Iran’s military defense reads.
While Iran says the attack caused limited damage, the nation maintains that it is “entitled” to defend itself in the future.
“Iran is entitled and obligated to defend against foreign aggressive actions, based on the inherent right of self-defense, which is also reflected in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter,” Iranian officials stated, according to Iran International.
Similarly, Israeli military officials say they are “obligated” to respond if Iran retaliates.
“If the regime in Iran were to make the mistake of beginning a new round of escalation — we will be obligated to respond,” a spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces stated.
Prior to a rally in Michigan, Vice President Kamala Harris told reporters that she had spoken with President Joe Biden and said that the White House supports Israel’s “right to defend itself.”
“We are also very adamant that we must see deescalation in the region going forward and that will be our focus,” Harris explained.
Biden expressed similar sentiment saying Israel “didn’t hit anything but military targets.”
“I hope this is the end,” Biden continued.
