Major League Baseball has announced the latest awards in the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) for the winners of the Cy Young Award. The BBWAA has already crowned the 2020 Rookie of the Year and the Manager of the Year earlier within the week. The American League(AL) honoree and Cy Young Award winner was Cleveland Indians’ starter, Shane Bieber. In the National League (NL), it was Trevor Bauer of the Cincinnati Reds who took home the Cy Young Award honors.

In the NL, Trevor Bauer’s performance with the Cincinnati Reds was worthy of some recognition. Bauer was dazzling on the mound and was one of the Reds’ best arms as they found their way into the 2020 postseason. However, Bauer will now be a free agent as the offseason progresses.
Bauer pitched to a 5-4 record over 11 starts over the course of 73 innings pitched. Over the course of the 11 starts that Bauer made during the 2020 season, he posted a 1.73 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP, and punching out 100 hitters over 73 innings pitched for the Reds. This is Bauer’s first time winning the award in his nine-year big league career, and he is the first Reds pitcher to win the award as well.

In the AL, Bieber took home the 2020 Cy Young award for his incredible performance on the mound. This should be no shock to anyone since Bieber was incredible on the mound and managed to win the Pitching Triple Crown in 2020. Bieber unanimously takes home the honors after an impressive 12 starts for the Indians.
Bieber posted an 8-1 record over those 12 starts where he had a 1.63 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP, and 122 strikeouts over 77.1 innings pitched in 2020 for the Indians. He had a 14.2 K/9 rating over 12 starts.
This was Bieber’s first time winning the award in just his third season in the big leagues. A pretty incredible 2019 and 2020 season have helped Bieber get to the level he is currently performing at. Last year it was Justin Verlander and Jacob deGrom, who took home the honors for the 2019 Cy Young award.
To cap off the week, it will be the BBWAA handing out the coveted Most Valuable Player(MVP) award for each respective league. The 2020 Most Valuable Player award will be handed out on Thursday, November 12th, on MLB Network.
