Tragedy has struck the world of college football yet again.
On Saturday, August 29, 2026, William Jewell College running back Micah Jo Barnett died after experiencing a medical emergency.
“William Jewell College and the Liberty, Missouri, community mourn the passing of Micah Jo Barnett, a junior business administration student and member of the Jewell Cardinal football program and former Liberty North Eagle,” a statement from the college reads. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Micah Jo’s family, our students, the Cardinal football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss.”
Barnett and the William Jewell College Cardinals played the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks at Green Stadium in Liberty, Missouri. With 5:15 left in the first quarter, the Cardinals took an early six-point lead against their Division II foes.
Shortly after scoring the team’s first touchdown of the season, Barnett reportedly experienced a medical emergency on the sideline, and play was suspended with 4:32 left in the first quarter. He was transported to a nearby hospital before being pronounced dead.
The college held a vigil for the fallen student and noted that “funeral arrangements will be shared when available.”
