On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, former Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo reportedly pleaded no contest to a charge of operating while intoxicated. The former NFL star must pay a fine, complete an alcohol assessment program, and is prohibited from driving for six months. When his license is reissued, Romo must install an ignition interlock device (IID) on his car, which will remain in effect for at least one year.
“This morning, I faced a recent personal failure by pleading no contest to a civil offense for OWI in Wisconsin,” he wrote. “I own this completely.”
On July 23, 2026, Romo was arrested near the Marquette Interchange in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on suspicion of operating while under the influence. Officers issued him citations for operating while under the influence, unsafe passing, and possession of an open container in a moving vehicle. Shortly after the arrest was made public, CBS, where Romo works as an NFL analyst, issued a statement putting him on indefinite leave.
“Tony Romo is on leave from his role at CBS Sports until further notice,” the statement reads.
CBS Sports has not issued a statement regarding Romo’s most recent plea.
