Who watches the Watchmen? That’s the question Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons asked back when they wrote the Watchmen graphic novel. And that’s the question Damon Lindelof is asking with his new reimagined adaptation. Until now, we’ve been kept mostly in the dark about what to expect from the HBO’s new series. Other than a short teaser earlier this summer and a sneak peek during HBO’s 2019 preview, the premium cable network has drip-fed info about the series to its fans. But Saturday they finally pulled the curtain back enough for us to look in.
To coincide with the series’ real-world experience at Comic-Con, HBO released the first full-length trailer for Watchmen. The trailer gives us a look at how exactly the source material has been updated and remixed for a new generation.
Dr. Manhattan lives in exile on Mars. Ozymandias seems to still be biding his time, planning something big. Both Rorshach and The Comedian are invoked but neither is actually seen. All this hints that certain events from the source material may still be canon. Just without the… explosive consequences. In this world, vigilantes are similarly outlawed and tensions are high as a revolution seems inevitable. Check out the new trailer for yourself:
Regina King stars alongside Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Jean Smart, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II
Watchmen premieres in October on HBO.
