Ted Turner, the visionary media mogul who revolutionized global journalism by founding CNN, has died at the age of 87, according to statements from Turner Enterprises and multiple confirmed reports.
Turner passed away on May 6, 2026, at his home near Tallahassee, Florida. While an official cause of death was not immediately disclosed, he had previously revealed in 2018 that he was battling Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disorder.
A Revolutionary in News Media
Born Robert Edward Turner III in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1938, Turner built a media empire from modest beginnings in his family’s billboard business. His most transformative achievement came in 1980 with the launch of CNN, the world’s first 24-hour cable news network.
CNN fundamentally changed how news is delivered and consumed, providing continuous coverage of major global events and setting the standard for modern broadcast journalism. The network gained prominence during historic moments such as the Gulf War and helped usher in the era of real-time, around-the-clock reporting.
Beyond CNN, Turner expanded his influence through Turner Broadcasting System, which included channels such as TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies. His business ventures also included the acquisition of MGM/UA and a landmark merger with Time Warner in 1996.
A Bold Personality and Lasting Legacy
Known for his outspoken demeanor and larger-than-life personality, Turner earned nicknames like “The Mouth of the South” and “Captain Outrageous.” His willingness to take risks and challenge industry norms made him one of the most influential figures in media history.
Turner’s impact extended beyond television. He owned professional sports teams including the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks, and he was an accomplished yachtsman, even winning the America’s Cup in 1977.
Philanthropy and Environmental Advocacy
A committed philanthropist, Turner pledged $1 billion to the United Nations—one of the largest charitable donations ever made—and established the United Nations Foundation. He also co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative, focusing on reducing global security risks.
In addition, Turner was a prominent environmentalist and one of the largest private landowners in the United States, using his land for conservation efforts, including bison restoration.
Remembering a “Televisionary”
Industry leaders and colleagues have remembered Turner as a fearless innovator whose vision reshaped journalism and media worldwide. CNN leadership described him as a foundational figure whose influence will endure for generations.
Turner is survived by his five children, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
From pioneering 24-hour news to redefining the boundaries of media and philanthropy, Ted Turner leaves behind a legacy that permanently altered the global information landscape.
