It’s been over ten years since Tina Fey’s Mean Girls strutted onto the big screen, but that doesn’t mean the drama is over yet. There have been some feeble attempts to keep cat-scratching hit alive (looking at you, Mean Girls 2), but nothing has been able to reignite the passion of the original film’s fans.
However, there’s a new spark of hope, provided by Mean Girls writer Tina Fey. On last night’s episode of Watch What Happens Live, Fey confirmed that a musical is indeed in the works:
“We haven’t finished it yet, but it’s close – yes, close.”
Fey reported that she’s working on the script with her husband, composer Jeff Richmond. The musical will favor music in classic Broadway styling, rather than pop songs. Fey has also promised that she will not be reprising her film role, nor will she call on any of the original cast members for the production.
