A few weeks have passed since Joel “The Kid Mero” Martinez and Daniel “Desus Nice” Baker called it quits on their joint endeavors. In the aftermath of the comedic duo’s breakup, fans have been left wondering why it all happened so suddenly.
Desus Nice has stayed away from providing in-depth remarks regarding the split but The Kid Mero has appeared on My Expert Opinion with Math Hoffa and WFAN with Keith McPherson. However, neither of those interviews provided as much detail regarding the breakup as was provided in The Kid Mero’s recent appearance on Basic!
During a conversation with Jen Chaney and Doug Herzog, the New York native said that the split was agreed upon one year before it was announced.
“Desus and I had a discussion, and we had been pursuing separate interests for over a year before the show came to an end,” he said.
“That conversation solidified for us in signing overall agreements that recognized our intent to [break out] independent of one another. So as far back as June of last year, we were both pitching or looking to join existing projects as individuals. It was a strategy.”
The Kid Mero said that the decision to part ways was tough, but it was done so in a “supportive” manner. Moving forward, he hopes to dive more into writing and producing.
“I started writing so [I want to] dig a lot more into that, features, series, books, I want to get into all of that,” he told Herzog and Chaney.
The New York native recently starred in ESPN’s The Captain and Netflix’s Vampires vs. the Bronx. As for Desus Nice, he is expected to have a guest hosting stint on Jimmy Kimmel Live! later this year.
