Fans of the sweet science are still in awe of the excellence Terence Crawford displayed in the ring at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday, July 29. The Omaha, Nebraska native knocked previously unbeaten champion Errol Spence Jr. three times before referee Harvey Dock stopped the action in the ninth round. With his incredible performance, he became the first male boxer to win undisputed titles in two different weight classes. In due time, fans of the sport, journalists, former champions and many others began to ask, “How does Terence Crawford stack up against the greatest welterweight champions of all time?” During a recent interview with Ebro and Peter Rosenberg, Crawford spoke openly about his place in the boxing history books.
“If you put me in the ring with any of the great fighters from in [or] around my weight class – past, present or future – I’ll hold my own with them,” Crawford told Hot 97.
“That’s just how I feel. I just feel like our styles have evolved from the older fighters, they paved the way for us and the things that they adored and were doing in the ring, we mimic them – but we take it to the next level. But I think I hold my own with any of those guys.”
Crawford’s recent comments mimic many of the answers he gave prior to the fight. In his words, a win against Errol Spence Jr. was the “cherry on top” of a hall-of-fame career.
“With the magnitude and the stage and just everything that’s surrounding this fight, yes I needed Errol. But legacy-wise, I had already accomplished a lot and was already a Hall of Famer,” he said prior to his most recent win.
“This win is the cherry on top for me.”
