After missing out on Wesley Matthews and Monta Ellis, the Kings have finally made their first signing of free agency. The deal makes sense for both sides. Rondo has been in search of a one year deal in order to rebuild his reputation after a disappointing stint in Dallas. Rondo is hoping to cash in on a major raise next summer with the expected TV contract.
Sacramento has been desperate to get into the free agency action after clearing cap space in a very lopsided trade with the 76ers. It appears that Rondo and Darren Collison will play on the floor together from what Marc Spears has reported. I’m not sure how effective this will be defensively, but nevertheless the Kings could be an entertaining 8 seed if everything goes their way this upcoming season. Rondo has built a good relationship with center DeMarcus Cousins in the past and maybe this could be a way of calming him down from the George Karl fiasco. Rudy Gay was also reportedly a huge factor in convincing Rondo to sign with Sacramento. Rondo averaged 10.8 assists per game in 22 games with the Celtics last season as compared to 6.5 in 46 games with the Mavericks.
