Star Wars: The Force Awakens was full of so many treats for the franchise’s fans, one of which was the discovery of actor John Boyega. The actor is now becoming quite established in the film industry, but as Deadline reported this morning, he is now ready to break into a theatrical career.
Boyega has just joined an adaptation of Woyzeck, which will run in 2017 at the Old Vic. Although the young star has had previous roles in the National Theatre, this upcoming production will mark his first lead role in a major theatrical production.
Woyzeck is a stage play written by the German Georg Buchner in 1836. Although Buchner’s death prevented the playwright from ever completing the project, several other authors have taken it upon themselves to finish the story posthumously.
The titular character of the play is a lowly soldier in a small German town, who earns extra money by completing medical experiments for the Doctor. This causes the protagonist’s mental health to wear down, and he experiences a series of apocalyptic visions. The play is considered to be a thought-provoking commentary on social condiitons.
Jack Thorne, the scribe tasked with adapting His Dark Materials for BBC One, is writing the script for this upcoming production.
Boyega is currently working on the next Star Wars film, as well as The Circle with Emma Watson and Tom Hanks.
