Idris Elba will star in an upcoming documentary titled Mandela, My Dad and Me.
The film will see the actor on “a journey of self-exploration” as he records his 2013 album mi Mandela and copes with the loss of his father.
Elba recorded the album after spending time in South Africa researching its musical culture, while filming Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
The documentary was originally meant to focus on the recording of the album in South Africa and Mali during the final months of 2013, but the subject matter shifted when Elba’s father passed away suddenly shortly before he was scheduled to leave.
Mandela, My Dad and Me will premiere with a screening at London’s BFI on April 7, with a full theatrical release to follow.
