Ellen DeGeneres is going to be honored as the second recipient of the Carol Burnett Award during the 2020 Golden Globes on January 5th. The award was introduced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association last year to honor notable television personalities for exceptional achievement. Burnett herself received the first award last year for her incredible career and exceptional work on the small screen.
In regards to DeGeneres, HFPA president Lorenzo Soria released the following statement: “From her sitcoms, to stand-up, to becoming a household staple on daytime television, she is a pioneer who has captivated audiences for nearly 25 years with her undeniable charm and wit. In addition to her television success, she’s an advocate and philanthropist, lending her voice to those who don’t have one, and spreading kindness and joy through the power of her platform. We look forward to celebrating her achievements at this year’s ceremony.”
DeGeneres first gained notoriety for her role in These Friends of Mine. She proved so popular on that series that it renamed Ellen after the first season. The series received numerous Emmy and Golden Globe nominations of the years. DeGeneres earned an Emmy for writing the ‘Puppy Episode,’ which saw her on-screen persona coming out as she did so in real life on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Her current talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show has become a pop culture icon as its currently in the midst of its 17th season. It’s racked up an incredible 63 Daytime Emmy Awards, which includes a record 11 for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show. She’s also been nominated for a number of Emmys for various stand-up comedy specials over the years.
DeGeneres already had a pretty big year before the announcement of this award. Back in May she signed a sizable three-year extension to continue doing The Ellen DeGeneres Show through the 2022-2023 TV season. And, earlier this fall, she signed on to produce three new original series for HBO Max. The new streaming platform is set to launch in May 2020 but no word yet on when DeGeneres’ shows will be dropping.
DeGeneres is set to receive the Carol Burnett Award in person during the ceremony. The 2020 Golden Globes airs on January 5th, 2020 at 5 P.M. PT/8 P.M. ET
