The 2022 NBA Trade Deadline is over and now teams need to make other decisions. Dorian Finney-Smith and the Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a four-year extension worth $52 million. He was set to be an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason, but terms were reached to prevent that. A top rotational player for the Mavericks is under contract long-term. Finney-Smith is currently 28 years old and will turn 29 in May. The Mavericks can now shift their focus to other things moving forward.

The Mavericks’ long-term goal has to be continuing to build a contender centered around young star Luka Doncic. They must also continue to keep him happy and this should do that. Dorian Finney-Smith and Luka Doncic have good chemistry and he is a talented rotational player in the NBA. During this season the forward is averaging 10.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and two assists per game. He paired those numbers with a field goal percentage of 43.5 percent and a three-point percentage of 36.3 percent.

The Dallas Mavericks are currently sitting at fifth in the Western Conference with a 32-23 record. Now that a top rotational player is secured long-term the team can potentially look at the buy-out market to make a playoff push. Winning a playoff series with Luka Doncic needs to be the top short-term priority for the franchise. This was a smart move for the franchisee that needs some stability around their star. The deal is also fairly team-friendly for the franchise over the next four years.
