May 7 will mark the launch of Comic-Con HQ, the subscription video-on-demand platform from Comic-Con International and Lionsgate. Last April, the companies announced plans for the service. The platform will include original series, daily and weekly entertainment commentary, live programming, film and TV genre titles, and behind-the-scenes features from titles.
Comic-Con HQ will begin with free beta access on its launch date. The service will officially premiere in June as a lead-up to Comic-Con International: San Diego. There has been no set price for the VOD. Seth Laderman, the executive Vice President and general manager for Comic-Con HQ gave this statement, as reported by Variety:
“For nearly half a century, Comic-Con has served as the definitive common ground where the fans of genre entertainment come together to express their passion for comics and pop culture. Comic-Con HQ aspires to extend that exchange 365 days a year, bringing everything we love about Comic-Con to the world in ways never before seen and experienced. The new platform will provide a year-round destination to enjoy all facets of the community and access the vast diversity of content the world has come to expect from the largest and longest-running pop cultural celebration of the year.”
This initial announcement also revealed that Adam Sessler (former host of G4’s “X-Play”) will be involved as executive producer on programs surrounding comics, science, and gaming. The famed gaming personality will also host his own interview series.
Other projects under development for the service include a late-night talk show, a pop culture news show, and a an-all female panel on pop culture from women’s perspectives.
The companies have also disclosed a number of the series that will make their debut on platform: the scripted comedy series Kings of Con, the science entertainment program Impossible Science, and an unscripted series called Her Universe.
