Cautious Clay has delivered his long-awaited debut album, Deadpan Love. Complete with fourteen new tracks, the project includes contributions from Tobias Jesso Jr., Jim-E Stack , Daniel Nigro, Jesse Shatkin, Ammar Malik and Sir Nolan. Not to mention, Chicago’s own Saba offers a guest verse on “Strange Love.”
“Deadpan Love explores the ways I cope with the worst of what humanity has to offer,” he said about his debut studio effort.
“It’s about opposites—having an outer layer that’s tougher, this ‘deadpan’ state, and an inner layer of compassion, where you’re open to being there for the people you care about. It’s this warring compassion and cynicism that has empowered me to express myself through this medium.”
In many ways, Deadpan Love is what we’d all hope our first book, film, profile piece, etc. would be. It’s an artist who’s pretty much mastered his sound. Pulling the best pieces of Resonance, Blood Type and Table of Context, the Ohio native feels both confident and comfortable on each track as he explores this “deadpan” state that he’s found himself in as of late. Don’t just take my word for it. Listen to the full album below.
