Having produced for the likes of Lil’ Wayne, Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé, it’s safe to say that Grammy Award-winning producer Brian “Soko7” Soko knows talent when he encounters it. Therefore, when he says soulful Filipina R&B artist Jay Kent is an “exciting new talent” with an “understanding of production & instruments [that] gives her an edge over her peers,” the world should listen. This spring, the emerging vocalist did just that, allowing the world to hear her songwriting and vocal versatility through a new single called “Texting.”
“Texting” is, unfortunately, an all too relatable track that explores the breakdown of a volatile relationship due to poor communication and a lack of action. In an exercise of being more direct, the smooth soundscapes of the spring single give Jay Kent the runway to demand that her significant other stops texting her and asks, “Why don’t you just be mad at me in person?”
The song’s relatability is just one ingredient that makes “Texting” one of Jay Kent’s best offerings yet. Jay Kent’s delivery of each verse packs an enticing blend of swagger, style and sensuality. The passion and sincerity that coats her vocals give off a ton of “I’m fed up” with a hint of “Still, I want you to come through.”
“[It] feels like a relationship that avoids confrontation,” said Jay Kent about her new single.
“People nowadays do everything through text, and I feel like typing your emotions down in a green or blue bubble doesn’t really show sincerity. Although it says delivered, how do you know if it has been delivered to their heart and mind?”
Sitting at the intersection of romance, social commentary, and modern-day R&B, “Texting” is the latest reminder of why producers like Soko7 have such praise for the Filipina vocalist. Check out the full track below.
