Earlier this month, Microsoft launched Backwards Compatibility on Xbox One allowing players to relive their favorite moments from Xbox 360. Some players would automatically ask about the original Xbox and if its game would be backwards compatible, but no one had an answer. Phil Spencer has previously mentioned that the games for the original Xbox would one day be able to be played on Xbox One, but if you’d asked when? No one would know, but we now have an update on the matter-at-hand.
Xbox Director of Program Management Mike Ybarra told the good folks at The Inner Circle Podcast “We’re not looking at original Xbox 1 games on Xbox One yet, and right now the focus is making more 360 games work, but I would say that nothing is impossible, certainly very challenging.” He also added “Getting 360 to work was incredibly challenging, and really a multi-year engineering investment going all the way back to the original certainly would challenge the team, we’re fortunate enough to have a great backwards compatibility engineering team, who loves to take on challenges, and I’m sure they would love that one as an opportunity to go look at.”
For now, enjoy your time playing 360 games and stay tuned for any updates on the original Xbox games coming to Xbox One.
