On Thursday, July 4, the World Boxing Council (WBC) has expelled Ryan Garcia “from any activity with our organization.”
“Exercising my authority as president of the WBC , I am hereby expelling Ryan Garcia from any activity with our organization,” WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“We reject any form of discrimination. I fear for Ryan well being as he has declined multiple attempts for our help with mental health and substance abuse.”
Shortly before Sulaimán issued a statement, Garcia went on a social media rampage filled with discriminatory and disparaging remarks aimed at several groups, including Mexicans, Muslims and Christians. The lightweight contender also repeatedly the words, “n—r” and “n—a,” and said, “Hey, let’s go bring George Floyd back to life and kill that n—r.”
Garcia’s discriminatory social media rants prompted a statement from his family. Released on Thursday, July 4, the Garcia family said it “unequivocally does not support any statements” made by Ryan.
“Our family unequivocally does not support any statements [Garcia] has made regarding race or religion — these do not reflect who Ryan truly is and how he was raised,” the statement reads.
“Those who know Ryan can attest to this fact. Ryan has been open about his ongoing struggle with mental health over the years and as a family we are committed to ensuring and encouraging that he receives the necessary help to navigate this very challenging time and address both his immediate and long-term well-being.”
Previously, Ryan Garcia received a one-year suspension from the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) after testing positive for performance enhancing substances in April. More recently, he was arrested for felony vandalism after allegedly causing an estimated $15,000 in damage to a Beverly Hills hotel.
