The North Carolina Tar Heels and head coach Roy Williams have stolen a recruit away from their archrival the Duke Blue Devils. 2020 Top 15 recruit Walker Kessler has committed to the Tar Heels over Duke and Auburn. This is the second commitment from a five-star prospect for North Carolina in the 2020 class.
North Carolina’s recruiting class jumps to No. 9 overall in the @247Sports Team Rankings with in the addition of Walker Kessler. Joins Day’Ron Sharpe. Pair of five-star post players headed to Chapel Hill.

The Tar Heels frontcourt is going to look like a traditional Roy Williams team come 2020 with the two freshmen, likely a sophomore Armando Bacot, and senior Garrison Brooks. This crowded frontcourt likely rules the Heels out for another frontcourt player like Brown or Todd in 2020. North Carolina will need to replace some guards and wings in 2020, so their recruitment is by no means over for the class.
The commitment came as a surprise during the big man’s official visit to Chapel Hill. Experts expected the five-star center to be a virtual lock to the other shade of blue in North Carolina. The Tar Heels are still in the running for prospects like Caleb Love and Ziare Williams to fill in other rotation spots on the roster. Rumors also seem to indicate that top three prospect Cade Cunnigham is also eyeing the Tar Heels after being a heavy Oklahoma State lean.
Roy Williams seems to be striking gold in the recruiting realm once again with another class with at least two five-star recruits on the board. The prospect of having “one and done” players in Chapel Hill isn’t new, but becoming a more common sight as of late. The 2020 class still has most of its players still on the board and Carolina would like to add a few more to its ranks for next year’s season.
