Recently, Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor of The Pivot sat down with Musiq Soulchild. In the opening minutes of the episode, Clark begins to talk about how the Philadelphia native’s music has played a part in his maturation.
“When I was driving around college and I was like, “Shoot, what am I going to put on? In my car, I was going to have [the] Hot Boyz because I’m from New Orleans, but I knew that probably wasn’t going to get her right.’ You know what I mean?” he said.
“I thought I was from New York a little bit, so I had a little Jay. Then, I was like, ‘Well, that ain’t going to work.’ But if I put this Musiq on, I might have a shot.”
In many ways, that’s the type of vibe THEY. has brought to their new single, ” In The Mood.” Produced by Dante Jones and Los Hendrix, the latest single from the duo brings an early 2000s vibe that mixes a party feel with an intimate sound. The track’s smooth feel is punctuated by the velvety vocals of Sam Drew and Dante Jones.
“We wanted to make something smooth that still had that knock to it, kinda like the uptempo joints that Donell Jones was known for back in the day. Yung Bleu heard an early version of the record and sent back one of our favorite verses we’ve ever had on one of our records,” the duo said about their newest single.
“In The Mood” sets the tone for the duo’s forthcoming album later this year. For now, check out “In The Mood” featuring Yung Bleu below.
