In 2022, things were a bit different to say the least. LeBron James and the Miami Heat won their second NBA title, Leonardo DiCaprio starred as Jordan Belfort and this music writer was just beginning his senior year of high school. Nine years later, James is a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, DiCaprio has added another Academy Award to his trophy case and this Choate Rosemary Hall graduate is now a full-time writer. With that said, one thing hasn’t changed. The Hics dropped their debut EP, Tangle, in 2013 and they have returned from a nine-year pause to deliver their latest project, Harmine.
The magic that The Hics captured in 2013 has somehow managed to live on their second EP, Harmine. The five-track comes complete with spacious soundscapes that seemingly feel like they take listeners on a dreamlike journey. Lyrically, the English band gets deeply personal with stories of pain, regret, heartbreak and much more.
“Caught in a lie/Yeah, I guess it’s all my fault/Just can’t get it right/Still exposing all my flaws,” Roxane Barker opens the project.
“Regret is all that’s left,” she adds.
Harmine is a powerful return for a collective of musically inclined storytellers who have toured with Bas and built strong ties with the Dreamville family in recent years. Having re-established themselves with an emotive sound that draws listeners in, it will be truly interesting to see where the band goes next. Whatever their next move is, they’ll have our attention.
