The Philadelphia 76ers are in the midst of investigating the reported Twitter scandal of President of Basketball Operations Bryan Colangelo, but it appears a verdict may not be too far away. According to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer the aforementioned investigation of Colangelo is expected to wrap up within the next few days as is a verdict on if he will stay with the organization.
Pompey says the timeline of the investigation was moved to accommodate the start of the NBA Finals. Commissioner Adam Silver commented on the investigation prior to Game 1 saying he has talked to Sixers management and that things will be done in a deliberate manner.
“Well, for the league there is always that balance of speed and doing things in a deliberate and appropriate way,” Silver said. “So I have talked to management at the 76ers, and the notion here was let’s find out what’s going on.”
Pompey adds that league sources expect Colangelo to lose his job with the Sixers. Numerous players and league sources add that it would be incredibly difficult for Colangelo to keep his position given the report.
“The only way that he’ll get out of it is if he comes with evidence that somebody set him up,” said an anonymous league executive speaking to The Inquirer. “If it is out there where they can’t prove either way, I don’t think he’ll keep his job. And if there’s involvement with a family member, it doesn’t look like he has a chance either.”
League sources also tell Pompey that Colangelo, who was in Los Angeles for NBA Draft workouts, was visibly shaken after the news broke from The Ringer.
With the NBA Draft three weeks away and the Sixers eyeing a big free agency splash, this investigation into Bryan Colangelo could put a damper on things. “This is a dark cloud that will hurt their prospects of signing quality players,” said another NBA executive to Pompey.
