Rolando “Rolly” Romero will reportedly fight Alberto Puello for the WBA Super Lightweight Championship on May 13, 2023 at a venue that has not yet been determined.
The challenger, Rolando “Rolly” Romero, last fought in Brooklyn, New York on May 28, 2022. In the sixth round, WBA “Regular” Lightweight Champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis knocked Romero to the canvas and handed him his first loss as a pro. Prior to fighting Davis, Romero won his first 14 fights, including 12 knockouts.
The champion, Alberto Puello, beat Jonathan Alonso to claim the WBA Interim Super Lightweight Championship back in 2019. In the years that followed, he beat Cristian Rafael Coria, Jesus Antonio Rubio and Ve Shawn Owens by decision. Back in August, he beat Batyr Akhmedov by split decision to claim the full title, improving his record to 21-0 with 10 knockouts.
Romero and Puello’s main event will be supported by 140-pound contender Gary Antuan Russell. The Maryland native is set to fight Kent Cruz in the co-feature. Russell last fought in July, handing former champion Rances Barthelemy the first loss of his career. Rounding out the card, Omar Juarez of Brownsville, Texas will fight the aforementioned Barthelemy in a super lightweight clash.
