Not long ago, it was unclear who lightweight contender Rolando “Rolly” Romero would fight at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas on July 17. His original opponent, Austin Delay, backed out of the fight and made way for Anthony Yigit to step in. Then, things got a bit tricky when Yigit weighed in five pounds above the 135-pound limit. Still, Romero was committed to the fight and decided to move forward anyway.
Romero was confident after Yigit weighed in heavier than expected and he performed like a world titlist. From start to finish, Romero’s power was on full display as rocked and ultimately dropped Yigit in the final two rounds. With that said, there were a few hiccups along the way.
Yigit’s awkward style made for an uncomfortable fight for both Romero and the referee. While Romero was in control for the entirety of the fight, he was docked a point for using his elbow to create distance. He also appeared to push Yigit off of him as he knocked him down for the final time. Fans booed the undefeated fighter, but he appeared to be unphased by it.
Moving forward, Romero hopes to get in the ring with undefeated champion Gervonta Davis. Both fighters have ties to Floyd Mayweather Jr., but it appears that Davis has his eyes on a potential fight with Ryan Garcia or Devin Haney in the near future.
