Ohara Davies and Ismael Barroso will fight for the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Lightweight Championship on January 6, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Barroso enters the interim title fight with a professional record of 24-4-2 with 22 knockouts. The Venezuelan veteran has won three of his last five fights by stoppage. In his last outing, he fought Rolando “Rolly” Romero for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight Championship, but lost in controversial fashion. Romero has remained inactive since the fight with unspecified medical challenges, providing the opportunity for Barroso to fight for a vacant title.
Davies enters his next bout with a professional record of 25-2 with 18 knockouts. Since suffering his second pro loss at the hands of Jack Catterall in October 2018, the London-born fighter has seven consecutive fights. More recently, he has earned stoppage victories against Abdessamad Nechchad and Lewis Ritson.
Davies and Barroso will not be the only fighters heading into the ring on January 6, 2023. Also, Vergil Ortiz is scheduled to make his debut in the super welterweight division. Not to be forgotten, super lightweight contender Arnold Barboza Jr. will make his debut under the Golden Boy promotional banner.
