On Saturday, December 9, 2023, the 2023 Heisman Trophy was presented to Jayden Daniels. Daniels is the third LSU quarterback to win the award, following in the footsteps of Joe Burrow and Billy Cannon.
“This is a dream come true,” Daniels said as he accepted the 2023 Heisman Trophy.
To win the 2023 Heisman Trophy, Daniels beat out three star college football players, including University of Oregon Ducks Quarterback Bo Nix, the University of Washington Huskies Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and the Ohio State University Buckeyes Receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
The journey to the 2023 Heisman Trophy Ceremony did not come without a few bumps along the way. Daniels began his historic collegiate career at Arizona State University in 2019. As a true freshman, he led the Sun Devils to an 8-5 record and wins against three ranked opponents while completing more than 60% of his passes and throwing for nearly 3,00 yards. His sophomore season was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic and his junior season was marred by allegations of NCAA violations throughout the Arizona State program. Ultimately, he would transfer to Louisiana State University (LSU) at the end of his junior year and begin his career in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Daniels transformed into a national powerhouse of a quarterback under LSU Head Coach Brian Kelly. In two seasons at LSU, he threw for 6,725 yards and rushed for another 2,024 yards. Along the way, the LSU Tigers won 19 of 26 outings and appeared in the 2022 SEC Championship.
