More details about Netflix’s planned anime series have come out. Along with the adaptations of Altered Carbon and Pacific Rim, an original series called Yasuke is also in development.
Yasuke will star Atlanta’s Lakeith Stanfield as the titular Yasuke, a retired ronin who is serving as a bodyguard for a young child. The ronin will have to fight magical warriors and fighting robots to protect the child from ‘dark forces’ on his way across feudal Japan. In one of the more interesting aspects of the series, Flying Lotus is set to write the score.
LeSean Thomas, co-director of The Boondocks, created and directed the series. It is inspired by the true story of an African Samurai who fought alongside a Japanese warlord. Lionsgate is reportedly developing a live-action film based on this story as well. No other cast or release date information has revealed for the series.
Netflix also announced two other anime series alongside Yasuke, Altered Carbon, and Pacific Rim: Trese and Cagaster of an Insect Cage. Check out DefPen’s article on the announcement for more details on those series.
