Netflix is continuing their international content push. According to Deadline, the streamer has tapped Korean director Hang Dong-hyuk to helm a new foreign language series, Round Six.
The series will tell the story of an unrelated group of people down on their luck. One day, they’re all invited to participate in a game of survival, the winner of which will receive $10 million. The game takes place at an unknown place and the contestants are locked in until only one person remains.
Round Six takes obvious inspiration from films such as Battle Royale and likely the Hunger Games franchise as well. No cast or release information has been announced yet.
Dong-hyuk did release a statement regarding the new series though. “I’m already thrilled at the prospect of introducing Round Six to a global audience through Netflix. I also have high expectations for the great collaborative work I’ll be having with them.”
The Korean director’s most recent project, The Fortress, was celebrated worldwide. It racked up over 30 award nominations at international film festivals, winning 16 of those.
In recent years, Netflix has had huge success reaching an international audience with series such as Money Heist and Dark. The former was so popular worldwide that even soccer superstar Neymar is a fan (and recently appeared in a cameo on the series.) Then, obviously, Netflix hit it huge last year with Roma. So, it seems like the company is going to continue its trend of an international emphasis.
