With every game that releases these days, there’s a 100% chance that there’s downloadable content in the works before the game ever releases. Some developers create season passes to distribute the content at a set price. Sometimes the price of the pass matches the amount of content being dished out, sometimes it’s not worth it at all. Occasionally developers release DLC to their consumers free and players love that.
There’s always a preconceived notion that developers push out games that are between 50% and 80% done. Factor in the fact that developers send out launch day patches of anywhere between 570 mb’s to 2.5 GB’s and you’ll believe it as well.
Now a few developers have spoken out against the ways some studios work, the latest being Need For Speed’s director, Craig Sullivan.
Sullivan feels like consumers DESERVE free DLC. In a recent interview with VICE, Sullivan spoke on Ghost Games plans to deliver DLC for Need For Speed, while touching on why fans deserve the free DLC.
“Everything we’re doing is focusing on listening to what the fans are asking for, they’re certainly not saying to us, ‘Can you build a load of stuff and charge us for it?’ They’re not saying that, so we’re not doing that. I know some people when we do press like this, they say, ‘Yeah, but I’m sure it’ll all change in a week or two, or six months.’ It’s not going to. The plan is that there are no transactions in this game. All of the content that we’re going to give you–a pretty substantial amount in the future, starting pretty soon–is going to be free. That’s what players deserve.”
Sullivan also spoke on future plans down the line. He lets it be known that he can’t tell the future, but for the very near future, there are no plans for paid DLC.
“You can never say never, as if we ended up doing DLC for this game for 10 years, I can’t know what’s happening in 10 years’ time, all I can say is, honestly, hand on heart, is there are absolutely no plans to charge for content in this game. We’re going to give you everything for free. I’ve seen the plans for what’s going to happen over the next few weeks and months–there’s nothing in there, by which I mean, we don’t even have the ability to charge you in the game. There’s no store to speak of.”
