Head Coach Penny Hardaway and the Memphis Tigers have landed the commitment of 2023 top 25 recruit and top ten combo guard Mikey Williams. While he has lost some ground in the rankings, Williams has been a highly touted recruit since entering the high school basketball scene. Throughout his recruitment, he kept things relatively quiet but did visit the Kansas Jayhawks before choosing Memphis. Williams also seriously considered several HBCU programs before deciding to play for Penny Hardaway next season. He plans to be a “one and done” prospect but will have to earn that right on the court.

Mikey Williams has put emphasis on building his brand beyond basketball and building generational wealth for himself. He already has several lucrative NIL deals and more will likely roll in for him now that he has committed to the Memphis Tigers. Williams was once a top-five recruit but has fallen in the rankings some over the past two years. He still maintains his five-star status despite the drop. Penny Hardaway will be the ideal mentor to get Williams to the NBA when he is ready.

Memphis has gotten several high-profile recruits to the NBA under the short tenure of Penny Hardaway. Mikey Williams will bring more attention and expectations to Memphis, but the program is used to that kind of pressure. Joining Williams at Memphis next year is four-star small forward JJ Taylor who committed to Memphis just minutes after Williams did. The Tigers also have other four-star and three-star recruits committed in the 2023 class.
