The New England Patriots have placed cornerback Malcolm Butler on injured reserve before his second stint with the team could begin. He had returned to the New England Patriots after retiring before he could play for the Arizona Cardinals last season. After leaving the Patriots the first time he played three seasons with the Tennessee Titans. New England has a serious lack of depth and quality at the cornerback position this season and this makes the situation even worse heading into the season. The Patriots’ plan moving forward is unclear at this time.

In 2020 with the Tennesee Titans, Malcolm Butler recorded 100 combined tackles, 86 solo tackles, 14 passes defended, and four interceptions that he returned for 111 yards. In his career, Butler has been named to one Pro Bowl and won two Super Bowls all with the New England Patriots. He is also well known for his game-winning interception of quarterback Russell Wilson in Super Bowl XLIX. He was slated to be an important member of the Patriots team this season, but now those plans are scraped.

The New England Patriots are in the middle of a rebuild after two decades of fairly uninterrupted success. With Tom Brady in Tampa Bay now the team has struggled to win games over the past two seasons. Losing Malcolm Butler is a major blow to the depth of the team’s cornerback room. A chance at the NFL Playoffs is there, but things aren’t looking great for the team right now. We here at Def Pen Sports wish Butler the best moving forward.
