The Los Angeles Chargers and safety Derwin James have agreed on a four-year contract extension worth up to $76.4 million. This deal includes $42 million in guaranteed money and makes the Chargers’ defensive back the highest-paid safety in NFL history. James is considered one of the best safeties in the NFL right now if not the best in the league. The Chargers are building a talented defense and James is the anchor in the secondary. While his injury history is a little concerning, the Chargers rewarded him for his level of play on the field.

Last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, Derwin James recorded 118 total tackles, 75 solo tackles, two sacks, three forced fumbles, five passes defended, and two interceptions he returned for 20 yards. In his three-year career, he has been named to two Pro Bowls and has been named an All-Pro one time. Both of the years he was healthy in 2018 and 2021 he showcased how talented he is on the field. Unfortunately, he did miss most of the 2019 season and all of the 2020 season.

The Los Angeles Chargers have young and talented players across their roster including Derwin James. Building up that talent is the sole focus right now for the team. Winning a Super Bowl down the road is the ultimate goal, but for now, the team hopes to make the NFL Playoffs this year and compete well in them.
