Back in August, 2k and Hangar 13 announced Mafia III with an amazing reveal trailer. Now within this trailer, they showed off the new protagonist, Lincoln, who is of color and Haden felt some fans may feel that the game may stray away from what the franchise was. The setting of Mafia III is set in Louisiana after the Vietnam War. Now in the latest issue of Game Informer, creative director Haden Blackman touched on the issues and makes it know that Mafia III will stay true to what the Mafia franchise has been.
Check what he had to say about the franchise and racism below.
We are not trying to be sensational, but thought-provoking is something that art is. All good art makes you think and stays with you. If we can be thought-provoking in some way without being overly provocative, then I think we’ve done our job.
Blackman also had this to say about the main protagonist.
We wanted to continue to develop the sense that Lincoln really wrestles with any sense of belonging and doesn’t really fit in anywhere, for all intents and purposes, he’s treated black by the majority of the city, but even when he’s working with the black mob there’s still a little bit of this, ‘Do I belong here?’ Lincoln is this guy who’s a complete outsider.
