The crowd echoed with anticipation for the arrival of Kevin Gates whom was opened for by Rod Wave and S Dot. It’s been five years since the Louisiana rapper, Kevin Gates, has performed in the DMV area due to a prior incarceration in 2014. This performance made his return to the Nation’s capital a homecoming of all sorts. Gates began the show expressing his love for his fans in the nearly sold out crowd. The audience at Echostage last night was a sing-a-long with fans performing every word to songs like “Facts” and “Walls Talking” from his latest album, “I’m Him”, which peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200. The aura transitioned from animated and spirited into a dark tone as he spoke about the trials that led up to his success.
Gates revealed that the scar on the left side of his face was from being shot by a close friend. His battle wounds were the driving force behind the Billboard Hot 100 charting song “By My Lonely”. The Breadwinners Association record label owner performed as long as the venue would allow giving the crowd throwback Kevin Gates with songs like “Time For That” from his two-time platinum debut studio album “Islah”, “Out The Mud” and “Satellites” from earlier mixtapes. It was a night to remember for Gates and Hip- Hop fans alike as they enjoyed the lyrical rapper’s storytelling and extensive discography of hits.
