I hop y’all don’t run into any haunted houses this week. Because, if the new trailer for The Grudge reboot is anything to go by, it’s going to be a bad time.
Based on the 2002 Japanese film Ju-on, the new film is actually the second American remake. The first one performed well at the box office with $187.2 million worldwide against a budget of just $10 million. It also spawned two sequels of diminishing quality and box office return. The third film in the American-made franchise made a paltry $1.8 million worldwide against a $5 million budget. Sony is surely aiming a little higher with this remake and though no official numbers are out yet, the film’s budget likely falls somewhere around $20-30 million.
In the trailer, we meet John Cho’s character as he arrives at his new house. Once inside he starts hearing strange noises and soon finds himself on the receiving end of a nasty haunting. Two local detectives are called in, one of whom has experience with that house. He reveals that someone was murdered there but he’d never gone inside himself because something always felt off about the house. Before long though, his partner goes to see the house for herself and immediately starts being haunted and hunted by a malevolent creature. The remake looks like it’ll fix a lot of the issues people had with the first attempt as it’s being updated for a new generation of horror fans.
