Kenya Barris is showing no signs of slowing down. As he prepares for another season of black-ish, the Hollywood titan is also working on the return of grown-ish. Not to mention, ABC just announced the release of another black-ish spin-off called mixed-ish starring Tika Sumpter. In the meantime, Barris continues his transition from ABC to Netflix. This week, the streaming platform announced the launch of Barris’ first major project.
Kenya Barris’ first project is a single-camera comedy called Black Excellence. The series will feature Barris alongside Rashida Jones in a family style sitcom that explores the intersections of parenting, race, culture and more. As reported by Variety, “the series is similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm in tone.” Netflix hasn’t presented a release date for the series, but it appears that the show has already started production.
Black Excellence is the first series of Barris’ Netflix deal which is rumored to be a long-term, nine-figure deal. Barris has joined creatives such as Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy who have all signed large deals with the growing streaming service.
