Head Coach John Gallagher has informed the Hartford Hawks that he is resigning from the position. This comes one day before the basketball program was set to begin its 2022-23 college basketball season. Hartford has been mired in controversy since the university announced that it would transition from division one to division three. Gallagher even sued the Hartford Board of Regents earlier this season. In the 2021 NCAA Tournament, Gallagher led the program to its first NCAA Tournament appearance. There have been concerning reports coming out of the university’s sports program.
Here is Gallagher’s resignation letter to Hartford president Greg Woodward.

The accusations that have been levied against the Hartford Hawks are concerning, to say the least. It seems that Head Coach John Gallagher felt a statement needed to be made heading into the program’s college basketball season. Board of Regent members and university leadership have been fairly quiet about acquisitions thus far and that may not change despite the coach’s resignation. The Hartford Hawks are set to begin their college basketball season on Tuesday against the Sacred Heart Pioneers at 7:00 p.m. EST. We here at Def Pen Sports will provide any updates about Gallagher or the Hartford Hawks should they become available in the future.
