Watt’s original goal was to raise $200,000 to help those in the Houston area affected by Hurricane Harvey. Easy to say, people stepped up and the original goal was surpassed.
The JJ Watt Foundation tweeted this statement after donating had been closed.

It seems like all we hear about recently is bad news. We can so easily come to the conclusion that the world is full of bad people and bad things. It can be hard to see any hope at all. But every now and again, someone comes along to challenge this view. To remind people that there are good people in the world.
But every now and again, someone comes along to challenge this view. To remind people that there are good people in the world. J.J. Watt was that person in this situation, as were the thousands that gave to help those in need.
There is still a long road ahead of those whose homes were flooded by the hurricane. It for everyone in the path of Harvey, Irma, and Jose. But if this has shown me anything, it is that when push comes to shove, we will unite together and help our neighbors. Thank you J.J. for reminding me of this.
