Jermall Charlo will have to wait a bit longer until he can re-enter the ring for the first time in over a year. Mike Coppinger of ESPN has reported that Charlo’s upcoming middleweight title defense has been postponed indefinitely due to a back injury. The Texas native was scheduled to fight Maciej Sulecki of Poland at the Toyota Center during Juneteenth weekend.
Charlo is currently ranked as the top middleweight in the world by many media outlets. However, he has been fairly inactive in recent months. The Texas native last defended his title on June 19, 2021, at the Toyota Center. He earned a unanimous decision victory against Juan Macias Montiel.
Sulecki has been a bit more active in recent months. In December, he earned an eight-round decision victory against Fouad El Massoudi. While he is currently on a two-fight winning streak, Sulecki has struggled against top competition. Nearly three years ago, Sulecki failed to win a single round as he challenged Demetrius Andrade for the WBO Middleweight Championship. He also lost to former middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs in Brooklyn four years ago.
It is unclear how severe the injury is. Therefore, there are no reports as to when this fight could be rescheduled.
