The NFL has suspended five players for violating the league’s gambling policy including most notably Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams. The Lions will also lose wide receiver Quintez Cephus, wide receiver Stanley Berryhill, and safety C.J. Moore to the suspension. Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney was also suspended after the NFL conducted an investigation into allegations that the players had violated the league’s gambling policy. Cephus, Moore, and Toney have been suspended indefinitely while Berryhill and Williams both received six-game suspensions. Detroit released both Cephus and Moore after the suspension was announced.

Detroit Lions General Manager Brad Holmes said the following in a statement after the suspension of Jameson Williams and the others was announced: “As a result of an NFL investigation, it came to our attention that a few of our players had violated the league’s gambling policy. These players exhibited decision-making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules. We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and C.J. immediately. We are disappointed by the decision-making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward.”
According to the NFL investigation, Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill did not gamble on any NFL games but still violated the policy by gambling on sports games. This led to a reduced suspension compared to the other players who were suspended. The players that were suspended indefinitely can apply for reinstatement to the league in one year’s time.
