Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts is set to cover the May/June edition of Essence Magazine. Hurts will make his essence debut with a cover story written by the legendary journalist Danyel Smith.
“Jalen Hurts is officially the highest paid player in NFL history! And who has his story? Essence does. Jalen is a Black man who loves Black women deeply & he wanted a Black publication to tell his story. I cannot thank my sister, Danyel Smith, enough for illustrating him so perfectly,” Essence Executive Editor Danielle Cadet tweeted.
Hurts has landed the cover of Essence shortly after put his signature on a new deal with the Eagles. Months after leading Philadelphia to an appearance in Super Bowl LVII, the Eagles have locked the star quarterback into a five-year extension reportedly worth $255 million. By securing the deal, Hurts will become the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history.
Hurts has come a long from his college days. After winning SEC Offensive Player of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year honors in 2016, Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban benched the starting quarterback during the 2017 College Football Playoff Championship. The award-winning quarterback spent the following season as the team’s backup quarterback. However, he shined in the 2018 Sugar Bowl and earned Offensive MVP honors. Hurts would eventually transfer to the University of Oklahoma for his final season and led the Sooners to an appearance in the College Football Playoff. As a pro, the 24-year-old quarterback has led the Eagles to two playoff appearances, an NFC Championship and a Super Bowl appearance.
