The UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability is set to honor Jaden Smith at an upcoming gala this fall. Smith is being recognized by the institute because of his tireless effort to provide clean water to marginalized communities. With this honor, he joins the likes of Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos and former presidential candidate Al Gore, who have both been honored by the institute.
“I’m excited to honor these young leaders in climate justice activism and action,” Marilyn Raphael of the UCLA Institute of Environmental Stability said.
“There is no doubt Jaden represents the new generation of environmental warriors who understand not only the climate crisis but also climate justice. I couldn’t be more thrilled to honor him and by doing so, help shine a light on these most pressing issues,” Lawrence Bender added.
For nearly a decade, Smith has worked to deploy clean water and water filtration systems in Los Angeles, California and Flint, Michigan. He has also launched his own nonprofit 501CTHREE. The California native said he was “humbled and grateful” to receive the honor.
“The climate challenges we face are too big to leave any ideas unexplored. Supporting the very bright minds at the school tackling the toughest problems with intellect and action is the true honor for me and my nonprofit 501CTHREE,” Smith told The Hollywood Reporter.
UCLA is slated to host a gala on October 13 to honor Smith.
