Honestly, with Game of Thrones coming to an end earlier this year, many expected HBO to start hitting a decline. But, if you watched that 2019 trailer the network’s been throwing around since February, you may think differently. The network certainly does, not only are they running two popular shows right now in Euphoria and Big Little Lies, but they’ve also got a stacked line-up for the rest of the year. And they’re bringing a lot of that to Comic-Con.
First up, on Thursday, the network will be showing off one of their new series, His Dark Materials. The series is an adaptation of Phillip Pullman’s controversial and acclaimed trilogy of the same name. A feature film adaptation of The Golden Compass, the first book in the trilogy, was attempted back in 2007. But, it didn’t resonate with audiences, HBO will certainly be looking to show why they believe their version will. Then, on Friday, the network’s golden goose will take one last bow as Game of Thrones will host a farewell panel. This one should get pretty interesting considering the fan backlash to the final season and many of the actors echoing those sentiments in recent weeks. Who knows, maybe we’ll even get a surprise teaser for the Thrones spin-off.
Rounding out the network’s official panels on Sunday is Westworld, which will be showcasing the show’s upcoming third season. Although it was pushed to 2020, there’s a chance they have enough footage to screen something substantial for those in attendance. However, it’ll most likely just be an update on the direction of the third season. Then, at some point over the weekend, HBO is hosting a Watchmen event in San Diego’s Gaslamp District. Not much is known about that but it seems like it’ll let fans experience the world of the new series first-hand.
Otherwise, as I said, I expect some kind of surprise Thrones related announcement from HBO over the weekend. Whether or not that’s regarding the in-production prequel, or one of the other few rumored to be in development though, we’ll have to wait and find out.
Stay plugged into Def Pen throughout the entire weekend for updates on everything HBO announces!
