The 40-year-old was a star shooting guard at Providence. He was selected 45th overall in 1997 by the then Washington Bullets. He played two seasons in the NBA before a long career overseas in both Europe and Asia.
Shammgod was best known for his ball-handling ability. Many NBA players, most notably including Kobe Bryant, have attributed some of their own moves to Shammgod.
Shammgod has already gained experience in coaching at his alma mater. At Providence, he became a mentor to Wolves’ rookie Kris Dunn.
The Mavs will now have Shammgod on their coaching staff to do the same thing. As a player development assistant, he will likely be assisting players improve their ball-handling ability. One player who could benefit greatly from this move is Harrison Barnes who was just recently signed to a max deal.
God Shammgod is a bit of a cult hero in the world of basketball. Seeing him on the big stage, in a way, is going to be strange. On the other hand, seeing him help other players reach his level of prowess with the ball in their hands will be interesting to say the least.
