black-ish is getting the Girlfriends back together. That’s right, Tracee Ellis Ross is reuniting with Golden Brooks, Persia White, and Jill Marie Jones during the upcoming season of black-ish. Ross also spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the reunion, “the timing was perfect to be able to bring Girlfriends to a whole new audience. We haven’t all been together on camera since 2006.” Girlfriends originally ran from 2000-2006 on UPN and for two more years after that on The CW. Ross’ comments reflect the fact that Jones left the series after the sixth season.
Ross continued, speaking about how she felt on set with her old co-stars again. “Girlfriends ran for eight years and was important to so many people. Being able to merge the worlds of black-ish and Girlfriends was surreal for me — and so much fun. These are women I grew up with and love deeply and it was easy to tap back into the magic of our chemistry and how much we love each other. It was giggles on top of giggles on top of giggles.”
black-ish had somewhat of a rocky start but has blossomed into one of ABC’s biggest draws over the last 6 seasons. It’s already got one successful spinoff, grown-ish, on Freeform with another, mixed-ish, coming to ABC this season. And despite the show’s creator Kenya Barris leaving ABC for Netflix, black-ish shows no sign of slowing down going into its sixth season.
black-ish season 6 premieres September 24th on ABC; ‘Feminisn’t,’ the Girlfriends reunion episode airs a couple of weeks later on October 8th.
