WBA “Regular” Lightweight Champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis and unbeaten contender Ryan Garcia are set for a high-profile showdown on April 22, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Neither the broadcasters nor the fighters have identified a venue for the bout, but the MGM Grand Garden Arena, T-Mobile Arena and Allegiant Stadium have been identified as potential venues for the fight. Initially, the fight was scheduled to take place on April 15, but it appears the fight has been pushed one week to implement additional promotional efforts.
Gervonta “Tank” Davis enters the lightweight clash with a perfect record of 28-0 with 26 knockouts. The Baltimore native last fought on January 7, 2023 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. In a pay-per-view fight with super featherweight champion Hector Luis Garcia, the secondary lightweight champion earned an eighth-round stoppage win.
“I was trying to trick him with my hands and my eyes and things like that because he’s a tough fighter,” Davis said about landing a left hand at the end of the eighth round that seemingly ended the fight.
“I had to bait him. God willing, I’m ready for the fight [with Ryan Garcia]. It’s scheduled for April. He’s been training; he’s been talking.”
Ryan Garcia was originally scheduled to fight in January as well, but he decided not to take a “tune-up” fight. In his 23 professional victories, the California native has scored 19 knockouts. His last fight took place on July 16 at the Crypto.com Arena. Fighting in front of Michael B. Jordan and several other Hollywood stars, he knocked his opponent, Javier Fortuna, down three times en route to a sixth-round stoppage.
