The Georgetown Hoyas have announced the hiring of Providence Friars Head Coach Ed Cooley as their next Head Coach. With this move, the Hoyas are hoping to move past the multiple seasons of losing basketball they have endured for some time now. Georgetown fired Head Coach and former star player Patrick Ewing this offseason after multiple losing seasons. Cooley was linked to the job with the Hoyas before the Friars were even eliminated in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament by the Kentucky Wildcats. Cooley turned the program around after joining them and will now try to do the same for the Hoyas.

As the Head Coach of the Providence Friars, Ed Cooley led the team to an overall record of 242-153 with a Big East record of 118-99. The team made the NCAA Tournament seven times with one appearance in the 2022 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. The Providence, Rhode Island native turned his hometown team into a solid Big East program, but will now move on to the Hoyas. Georgetown hopes he can do something similar for them and turn them back into a national program.
This is a brutal loss for the Providence Friars, who not only lose their long-time Head Coach but to a rival Big East program. Their search for a new Head Coach will begin now with a few promising candidates already on their radar.
