
Whovians, HBO Max may be your new favorite streaming service when it lands next Spring. That’s because it’ll be the exclusive streaming home to all 11 seasons of the new Doctor Who series and any future seasons once they air on BBC and BBC America. As part of a huge deal struck between WarnerMedia and BBC, HBO Max has also become the exclusive streaming home to a number of BBC favorites. The Office, Luther, and Top Gear are just a few of the shows that will be available on the platform at launch.
Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer at HBO Max and the President of TNT, TBS, and truTV released a statement regarding his company’s acquisition. “Doctor Who is one of television’s all-time, most beloved series, on both sides of the pond, and we are happy to be the exclusive streaming stewards for this BBC gem. Another series to further define the high-quality content experience consumers can expect from HBO Max.”
Nigel Gaines, the Interim President of BBC Studios – Americas, also released his own statement regarding the future home of the Doctor’s streaming rights: “As any Doctor Who fan knows, the iconic TARDIS is ‘bigger on the inside’ – and it’s a good thing because the TARDIS is about to welcome a whole new slew of fans coming to the show through this deal with HBO Max. HBO Max’s ambitious content line-up is the perfect complement to the Doctor Who global franchise, in addition to some of our most award-winning and game-changing UK dramas and comedies.”
HBO Max is now boasting an impressive line-up of original and exclusive content. Along with Doctor Who, HBO Max will be the exclusive home of both Friends and The Office. Then, there’s also original series like the Gossip Girl reboot, that interesting Kaley Cuoco-led drama, and even a Dune spinoff from director Denis Villeneuve in the works.
Doctor Who season 12 is expected to air on BBC and BBC America sometime in 2020. HBO Max is expected to launch next spring.
